If you love abstract art, color it is probably one of the main things that draws you in. The artwork can be bright and bold, soft and subtle, colorful, or monochromatic. No matter what colors the artist chooses, abstract art is always thought-provoking. Color is one of the many components that greatly influences an abstract piece's emotional impact. I'll go into the importance of color in abstract art, examining how it can affect how we perceive the piece.
The Power of Color
Color is everywhere, all around us, every day. When we see colors, we feel emotions in response to the colors.
For example, blue is often associated with the sky and water, evoking a feeling of calmness and tranquility. Pastels bring a sense of airiness, while black feels heavy and adds drama. In the West, white is often associated with purity, light, and innocence and is a popular color for wedding dresses. But in the East, white symbolizes death, and red is a more popular color for a wedding dress, symbolizing prosperity.
Color can be a powerful tool for artists, conveying complex emotions, moods, and ideas. In abstract art, colors can also be used to create visual interest, drawing the viewer's attention to specific areas of the piece. Often times, the play between light and dark helps guide the eyes on a journey across the canvas.
What Colors Are You Drawn To?
We may be drawn to certain colors because of personal preference, influences from our culture, current trends, and an unconscious emotional response to those hues.
Colors have a profound impact on our mood, energy, and emotions. Much like smell, taste and sounds, color can even evoke memories and associations from our past.
When you're decorating your home, you may lean towards calming shades like blue and green which can evoke feelings of serenity and tranquility. 0r maybe you prefer a minimalist look, incorporating neutral and earth tones, creating a peaceful and sophisticated atmosphere. 0r if you're a bold, playful type, you may be drawn to bold and vibrant colors like red and orange, which can stimulate creativity and energy.
When it comes to color, there is no right or wrong. It comes down to personal preference, and what makes you happy when you walk into your space.
My Approach to Color in Abstract Art
As a neurodivergent artist, I am attracted to the expressiveness of color. I frequently utilize analogous colors, that is, hues that are adjacent to one another on the color wheel. Then, to add visual interest, I incorporate complementing hues.
I use bold colors in my work to try to convey a sense of energy, and to take the audience on a journey. I like to explore color's emotional resonance and its potential to express complicated feelings and ideas. Sometimes I feel like the colors create a symphony across the canvas, creating a visual melody.
